The Grant's gazelle can survive on the plains after most [G 22 / herbivores] have left because it requires almost no water and is well adapted for drought conditions. It is thought that the Grant's very pale coat aides in water retention and regulation of body temperature.
Unlike the smaller Thomson's gazelle, the Grant's gazelle browses on leaves as well as grazes on grass. Its hind legs are muscular and adapted for standing upright for browsing on taller vegetation and leaping when threatened. The Grant's gazelle population is estimated to be 50,000 - one tenth the size of the Thomson's gazelle population.
